Mali’s second wave

For several weeks the number of cases of coronavirus has been increasing (RFI, 10 December) and the authorities are focusing on strengthening prevention and patient care capacities. Bamako is the main focus of the current second wave, followed by Timbuktu.

Morocco: vaccination campaign taking shape

The Moroccan Ministry of Health has announced that a Covid-19 vaccination campaign could start as early as the end of December (RFI, 7 December). The priority populations would be healthcare workers, security forces, civil servants and at-risk populations. After this first stage, Morocco aims to vaccinate 80% of people aged over 18 years (20 million people) on a voluntary basis over 3 months.

Mauritania: authorities re-establish curfew

The number of Covid-related deaths is accelerating in Mauritania (RFI, 13 December). The authorities have announced the re-establishment of a curfew from 6 pm to 6 am and extended the closure of schools, institutes and universities until 4 January.

Senegal’s second wave

Senegal is facing a second wave of Covid-19 (RFI, 11 December). Although the authorities have not announced any new restrictive measures, they have imposed zero tolerance for the wearing of masks. Senegal participates in the international mechanism for group vaccine purchases and the health authorities are considering which target groups will be vaccinated as a priority.

South Africa’s second wave

South Africa is experiencing a second wave of Covid-19 and remains the country on the continent most affected by the pandemic (RFI, 10 December). The most affected regions are in the south (Cape Town Region), the south-east, and the Pretoria and Johannesburg area. For the time being no further containment is envisaged, but a curfew has been introduced and beach closures are being considered; national parks could also be closed (RFI, 14 December).
